I'll have to go with the A-6E TRAM Intruder, I know, a lot of people say that it's flying backwards, but it's a rugged kind of pretty

This beauty flew in today to the museum--spending the night in the restoration hangar. Sounded great, looked great. It even smelled great--that hot oil smell, mixed with a little avgas........mmmmmm.

First time I've ever gotten up close and personal to a lightning. Even it's wheel wells were immaculate.

Soooo shiny!

It's not so much the design itself as its presentation. Thats true for lots of different planes. They are so-so in and of themselves, but put some different paint on em, and Wow!

Found out the reason the Red Bull Lightning's here: NAS Pensacola is it's jumping off point for a sea voyage to Europe. Seems that Pensacola has an aircraft carrier pier, but no aircraft carrier, so a commercial ship is coming in next week to hoist it aboard. Now--some of you might be asking--what's so unique about a carrier pier? The answer is quite simple. A naval air station is designed so that aircraft can fly aboard the station, and then be towed or taxied right to the pier, to be hoisted aboard ship.
So, most commercial ports are out of the question. Most other Naval Stations have too many ships vying for pier space to allow civilian use.
The plane's become quite the attraction, especially when it does it's daily ground run-up. We pull it out of the hangar each morning, and park it up near the fence, so visitors can get a good look. At night it rest alongside the OV-10, that's in for a fresh coat of paint.
