Saw her on a vacation traveling south. Saw a brochure and made a detour to go see her.

Glacier Girl, as she has come to be called was one of six P-38 fighters and two B-17 Bombers that were being flown to Europe just after the United States entered World War II. Bad weather caused the flight to turn back only to be trapped by additional bad weather. It was decided to have the entire flight land together before they ran out of fuel. Within a few days the crews were rescued but the planes remained , only to be buried under ice. Fifty years later the WWII Lockheed P-38 Lightning was dug out from 268 feet of ice in Greenland and after ten years of restoration she has finally been restored to flying condition. This is a great museum to visit and is not far from Cumberland Gap National Park in Tennessee.

I saw a show on how they recovered and restored her. What a great plane and story. I'm super-de-duper jealous

As a side note to the story of Glacier Girl: my father was co-pilot on the PBY that first found the survivors of the crash landing. They led in sled teams, flying circuits back and forth, to the site. Took several days for the teams to cover the 20 some miles inland to the site. Never knew it until after his death--found it in his logbooks.
